I use this color wheel when talking with clients. Just how many colors of blue are there? This wheel makes matching and coordinating colors a snap. It has an audition window, combinations for 3 and 4 color combos, and makes it easy to pick out accents, lights, darks, and mediums for your project...any project.

I found this in one of Jane Jenkins books. I loved her tone on tone but wondered what a bit of color and sparkle would look like. I used holofoil edged and parchment papers, swarovski crystals, and a beautiful background paper. Thanks for your inspiration Jane. I hope I did justice to your design.

I will be organizing a new quilling group in the Longview/Kelso WA area! We will be meeting at the Porcelain Rose Tea Shop located at 2022 10th Ave Longview WA. I have partnered with my friend Melinda to put together a tree for the Festival of Trees. Held at the Great Wolf Lodge Grand Mound, over thanksgiving weekend, this charity auction benefits Providence Centralia Hospital. Melinda made the origami and I made 3-D quilled birds and some woven stars. We joined our talents to top the tree with a star featuring both paper arts. Marie Antoinette would have loved this shoe but this one is made of paper. The blue "lace" is paper and the front tongue is quilled with pearl papers and yes even the peacock feather is quilled. The edge treatment for the feather is a combination of verdigris and platinum ink to give a natural iridescent shimmer. I found the buttons, lace and strung glass beads. In the upper picture you can just see the glass heal made fron a mini box knob. you can watch a video and download a template to make your own shoe...Thanks Terri!

high price of framing

This struggle has been going on for some time. Do I use a cheap frame so the customer is paying for the quilling not the frame? This does not present a professional product and your quilling, no matter how beautiful, is bound to suffer. That takes us back to a proper frame and a large expense for the customer. Unless you have personally priced the cost of framing, you can not see why art can be so expensive..."it's only paper" I heard one lady say while looking at my work.
What to do? I buy A7+ card blanks. This is slightly larger than 5X7 (standard size frame) I don't put any text on the front of my cards and on the back I have a label that reads: "suitable for framing" You pay for only the quilling and you can frame it any way you like. You end up with a price on your cards that your work deserves and knowing that your art is not viewed as "disposable" makes me happy. So make those beautiful cards and charge a proper price but be sure to use a high end card sleeve and include a business card too.

It has begun. I am working on Christmas items both for Artrails and the tea shop. Have you started your Christmas cards?
This is an ornament about 5 inches in diameter. It has no backing so the back of it had to be as neat and clean as the front. There are ASL, Wheatear, marquise, teardrop, tight coil, V scroll, and heart scroll. There are five shades of red and just as many shades of green. I used both 1/8 and 1/16 inch wide strips. The candle is fill work.

I have been working on grape roll shapes and struggling with smooth even shapes. Here comes another cross over tool. Blending stumps. I bought a variety pack and my shapes are consistently shaped into smooth even design elements. This design used graduated papers from Paplin.

I love how most of the hobbies I enjoy have cross-over tools. My cutting tools for quilting have been a big help. Now I have discovered a new tool. My hair dresser friend uses her cuticle tool from her mani/pedi kit. I was having trouble getting the look I wanted with my bunny ear shapes and after using the tool, I can control the shapes beautifully time and again. I can also use the angular flat end to push my tight peg layers into a smooth flat peg. I am finding that I am grabbing the tool for arranging coils into tight placed too. I would say my $.29 tool was worth every penny not to mention my cuticles are getting more attention now too.

Creating Movement

Have you ever looked closely at your coils? If you control the direction of your coils, you can create movement in your piece. These coils are exaggerated so you can see that the inner coils are rolled one way and then the next layer is coiled in the other direction. Even in simple five petal flowers you can create this. Next time you are putting your coils together, take note and use the lines. Add extra drama by inking the edges with a contracting color to really accentuate your coil direction. With a little care and attention to detail, you can make a pretty piece extraordinary.

Merry Christmas

Here is my latest Christmas ornament. I used jewel tone sheet papers to match my jewel tone strips and mixed punched elements with my quilling. (check side panel for ordering) I added seed beads and Swarovski crystals (check the side panel for ordering) for a bit more drama. This color palette is a first for me. I go to an ornament exchange every year and last year a lady handed me the one she got and said, "Here I'd like to see it next year done up the way you do them." I usually buy a dozen from my local glass blower for custom orders and this exchange. I use Crafter's Pick Ultimate glue to adhere the elements. http://www.crafterspick.com/ This product has never failed me. It goes on like Elemer's washable (white and liquidy) and dries like rubber cement (clear and a bit rubbery) When working with glass that is transparent, you don't want to see glue on the back of the design.

I just got a call for artists for a gallery in Cannon Beach. I have been thinking about getting my work in that area for a while now. The theme for the show is "Just Desserts". I can have three pieces in the show. Here is the first one!

It is a box shaped like a piece of lemon cake complete with a slice of lemon and "frosting" flowers sitting on a quilled plate. I am hoping to do the juried shows until they ask me to join their gallery. I think I will attempt a Marion berry pie next.

Here is a class sample showing the versatility of water color papers. There are so many ways to use them. It's almost like painting with paper. Just when you think you have exhausted the possibilities you discover an new way to incorporate them. I like the Paplin colors the best.

Adding color to your strips

I love all the edged papers but they are kind of pricey and come in limited numbers of colors. I have tea stained paper strips and I have used small scale rubber stamps on the width of the papers. Now, I am running the edges through ink pads to get just the right look.

I have been working on vintage cards as of late. I got a Dover Publication CD full of vintage prints. I love going on a tour of antique shops but the economy has made me rethink my tours. I have been enjoying my trips but I now frequent the postcard and greeting card bins. But it doesn't stop there. I color copy them so I can use them over and over for my greeting card creativity.

The Santa was a vintage card so all I had to do is add a bit of quilling. I am doing a series of Valentines and Mothers Day cards too.

New favorite product:
I have discovered two types of edged papers:
Touch of gold or silver edged quilling strips
Gilded and silvered edged quilling strips.
The touch of gold or silver papers give a frosted look and the gilded and silvered papers have a shiny solid line of metal. Depending on the look you want, both products have their place in my stash. Check out all the colors and edgings at Custom Quilling and Whimsiquills. If you want to add that touch of color to your existing stash, try tapping the edges of your coils and folded roses on a raised sponge ink pad. A friend of mine used a metallic pen and edged an entire pack of paper strips by standing the strips on edge, clipping and pulling the papers tight ,and ran the pen down the edge. I have found that doing a pack of papers is soooo much easier than doing one or two strips. I also found that giving the ink, whether pen or pad, a shot of heat from my heat gun will set the color. Edging your papers gives an added depth and interest for a rich looking project.

Where do you get your inspiration for design?

I enjoy a little silk ribbon embroidery and was leafing through a design book one day. As I was browsing, I didn't pick up a needle and ribbon. I picked up a strip of paper and discovered how easily the pattern translated to quilling! I was getting bored with my same old designs which had been done, redone and reworked for far too long. These two books are my goto when nothing clicks.

Another source but a bit more expensive is antique broaches and hair pieces. They, too, can put a new spin on design.

I have always loved quilting and still attend several retreats throughout the year. I have change my media to paper but have managed to bring fabric back to life.

Staples and Office Max have color copy sales and I take great advantage of them. My "fat quarter" collection of fabrics are a great way to turn fabric into paper. I take my farics down and make two-sided color copies. Then I cut the paper into strips and make quilled quilt blocks.

I use the patterns from Melinda Johnston's "Quilt Block" kit. Enlarge the patterns by 200%. You can get the kit from any of the favorite shopping links.

Wine Bottle Label

To inspire you: My husband and I have been visiting local wineries and enjoy sharing our finds with family and friend.

This is the time of year when dinner parties fill our entertainment schedule. I am always looking for the perfect hostess gift.

My first "go to" is a bottle of wine....but how mundane and rather impersonal. Sure the bags and boxes you can get are pretty but what a statement you will make with this quilled label!

Use sticky dots and you can use the label several times over.

Make your thank you card at the same time you do your label so you can match the colors and design. Now you will never forget to get that thank you in the mail.

Watercolor Papers From Paplin

Most recent find: Paplin has come out with a wonderful line of quilling strips called Graduated Shades of Color. The color on each strip goes from light to dark to light again. Unlike the English papers in this type, Paplin has used colors with a rich dusty look rather than the true color palette. They have added sheet paper to match. One last quilling strip collection is the two tone strips. And get this, they match the graduated papers too! Painting with paper has never been easier. For an even lacier challenge try them in 1/16" widths. I used them in the header picture.
